Components of a CNC slant bed lathe

1. Bed and Guideways

One-piece casting (usually high-grade cast iron or resin sand casting), with a 30°~60° inclined layout. The guideways are mostly linear rolling guideways (high rigidity, low friction) or plastic-coated sliding guideways. The inclined structure facilitates the sliding of chips to the front chip conveyor by gravity, and the operator is closer to the spindle end, making loading and unloading easier.

2. Spindle System

Consists of the spindle box, spindle, spindle motor (servo or frequency converter), bearings, and locknuts. The spindle is usually supported by high-precision P4/P5 grade angular contact ball bearings or cylindrical roller bearings, and stepless speed regulation is achieved by a servo motor. Some models have a C-axis function (spindle positioning/low-speed power milling).

3. Feed System (X/Z Axes)

Includes a servo motor, high-precision coupling, ball screw (C3/C5 grade), and linear guide slider. The X-axis controls radial (forward/backward) movement, and the Z-axis controls axial (left/right) movement. Precision positioning and interpolation movements are achieved through closed-loop control of the CNC system.

4. Turret System

Mostly a powered turret (hydraulic or servo-driven), capable of mounting multiple tools (typically 8-12 positions). Some positions can accommodate powered tools (milling/drilling units), enabling composite machining operations such as turning, milling, and drilling. The turret uses a gear plate for positioning to ensure repeatability.

5. Tailstock (Optional)

Used for right-end support in machining long shaft parts. Available in manual, hydraulic, or servo-driven configurations. Includes the tailstock body, sleeve, center, and locking mechanism. It can move or be fixed in position with the Z-axis.

6. CNC System

Composed of a CNC unit (motherboard, CPU, memory), operation panel (display screen, buttons/handwheels), servo drive unit, and motors. Responsible for decoding, interpolation calculations, I/O control, and status monitoring.

7. Auxiliary and protective devices

Auxiliary and protective devices including fully enclosed or semi-enclosed protective covers (anti-chip and anti-liquid), chain or scraper chip conveyors, cooling systems (water pumps, water tanks, nozzles and oil coolers/air coolers), automatic lubrication systems (oil pumps, distributors, oil pipes), pneumatic systems (chucks/door linkages) and safety light curtains/emergency stop buttons, etc.
