Common Issues with Vertical Machining Centers

 

 

 

Common Issue 1: Workpiece Undercutting/Overcutting
External causes for workpiece overcutting often include insufficient tool rigidity or inappropriate tool dimensions. Internal causes may stem from improper operator practices, incorrect cutting parameters, or uneven machining allowances leading to excessive tolerances-ultimately resulting in overcutting and machining errors.

 

To resolve this, ensure machining allowances are uniform when adding corner-clearing routines, use the largest possible tools, and utilize the vertical machining center's SF (Feedrate Override) function to fine-tune cutting performance for optimal results.


Common Issue 2: Inaccurate Centering
Centering is the process of establishing the origin on a machining center; virtually every operation requires this step. Beyond operator error, inaccuracies can arise from burrs on the mold edges, non-perpendicular sides, or magnetization of the edge finder.

Before centering the mold, demagnetize the edge finder. Double-check manual centering operations and aim to center at the same point and height consistently. Regularly use a dial indicator to verify the perpendicularity of the mold's sides.


Common Issue 3: Machine Crashes
There is a saying in machining workshops: "Good skills are forged through crashes." While crashes cannot always be avoided, a competent operator should be able to prevent those caused by avoidable factors. Since the causes of crashes vary widely, proactive control over avoidable risks is essential.

 

Avoidable causes include insufficient safety height settings, discrepancies between the tool length/machining depth listed on the CNC setup sheet and actual values, errors in Z-axis coordinate settings, and incorrect coordinate system setup during programming.

 

Therefore, accurately measure the workpiece height to ensure the machining center's safety height is set above the workpiece. Ensure the tools listed on the CNC setup sheet match those actually used in the program (generating setup sheets with images is recommended). Carefully measure the actual machining depth and clearly document tool length and flute length on the setup sheet. Clearly record the Z-axis coordinate value; since this involves manual input, verify it repeatedly to ensure accuracy.
