How to Choose the Right Grinding Wheel
Surface grinder wheels come in a wide variety of types and shapes. Due to differences in abrasive materials, bonding agents, and manufacturing processes, various grinding wheels exhibit distinct operational characteristics. Each grinding wheel, based on its inherent properties, possesses a specific range of applicability. Therefore, during grinding operations, it is essential to select the appropriate grinding wheel based on specific circumstances-such as the material properties of the workpiece, its heat treatment method, shape, dimensions, the specific machining process, and technical requirements. Failure to do so-that is, selecting an unsuitable wheel-will directly compromise machining precision, surface finish, and production efficiency. The following basic principles for grinding wheel selection are provided for reference:
A. When grinding materials with high tensile strength, select abrasives with high toughness.
B. When grinding materials with low hardness and high elongation, select relatively brittle abrasives.
C. When grinding materials with high hardness, select abrasives with an even higher hardness.
D. Select abrasives that do not readily undergo chemical reactions with the material being machined.
